Each year the Psi Chapter now holds 4 philanthropic events. In the spring, a taco feed called Alpha Phi-esta is held at the Vermillion National Guard Armory. The money raised went to a local charity, the Vermillion Backpack Program. In the Fall, the women of the Psi Chapter host USD's only formal philanthropy event, called the Red Dress Gala. The Red Dress Gala, held in the MUC ballroom, includes a silent and live auction, sit down dinner, music, dancing, and fun. All money raised goes to the Alpha Phi Foundation. Last year, the beautiful women of the Psi Chapter raised over $14,000 through their philanthropic efforts! The Psi chapter now has 2 new philanthropy events in the spring, "Cardiac Arrest", which arrests significant faculty, staff, and students for funds, as well as "Buy A Heart, Get a Kiss", where the women sell hersey kisses near Valentine's Day for cardiac care awarness and funds.
The original ten women who founded Alpha Phi were united with a common purpose. They felt the need to reach out as circle of friends who could sympathize. Alpha Phis today share that same need. They face many of the same challenges and some new ones. The Alpha Phi Foundation was created to support Alpha Phis and others in need and to express the philanthropic spirit of love and charity intended by the Founders.
The Foundation supports collegiate programming in health education and leadership development, cardiac research and education, and financial assistance for women of all ages through the Forget-Me-Not Fund, emergency grants and undergraduate and graduate scholarships.
Since 1946, Alpha Phi has focused on heart disease and cardiac care as a philanthropic priority. Today, research into the diognosis and treatment of women's heart disease is a special interest of the Alpha Phi Foundation. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women and Alpha Phi aspires to change that!
